IP67 vs IP68 for industrial connectors
When you specify a connector for an outdoor, marine, or wash-down environment, the Ingress Protection (IP) rating is the single most important specification. But IP67 and IP68 are often confused — here is what they really mean and how to choose.
Decoding the digits
The first digit (6) means dust-tight: no dust ingress at all. The second digit specifies water protection:
- IP67 — protected against immersion in 1 m of water for 30 minutes
- IP68 — protected against continuous immersion beyond 1 m, as specified by the manufacturer (typically 3 m / 24 h)
Which one do you need?
For most industrial sensor and outdoor lighting applications, IP67 is sufficient and more cost-effective. Choose IP68 when the connector will be permanently submerged — e.g., underwater pumps, marine sensors, or in-line pipe equipment.
